Social Media: Wait! Don't Leave!

Whether you’re active on social media for personal or business reasons (or perhaps both), there are a zillion excuses not to be present on it, including…

  • People are mean.
  • People aren’t responding to my posts/tweets
  • It takes too much time
  • It is useless

Great. So you deactivate your Facebook account and send your Twitter account into sweet oblivion.  And then, a few days later, you feel the silence. It’s a bit too quiet. And before you know it…

You’re back! You felt lonely.

If you are a business owner, you’ve just taken a step backwards by damaging all your previous efforts to build positive engagement with your fans and followers. Social media doesn’t sleep. If YOU do, people forget about you very quickly. Consistently is key.

The good news is that if you are the owner of a Facebook page, the page doesn’t go away when you deactivate, however, if you’re not there, you can’t post on it! And you probably have heard that to permanently delete a Facebook account you’ll go through oodles of time consuming steps to do so. Most people can’t be bothered!

However, this is NOT true for Google+. Their support section states: If you downgrade or delete your Google Account so that you no longer have access to Google+, all pages owned by you will also be deleted. Poof. Note: downgrade and delete mean the same thing in Google speak.

And when you delete a Twitter profile; it’s gone. Think of it as annihilation. No reinstatement here; you’ll start from scratch all over again.

Social media is a commitment. It’s there with you night and day; it’s global, therefore it’s in all time zones! There’s always someone out there that will see your post or tweet.

And yes, social media IS frustrating as heck sometimes (hello, Facebook); however, it is so important that you stick it out once you’ve started to create a presence. The ultimate goal is to create awareness for your product or service; yes folks, this is real marketing, not a stroll in the park.

On the other hand, social media can be fun. How do you feel when a fan says something really nice about your product or service right on your page where other fans can see it? Isn’t that a reassurance that all your efforts are getting some results for you?

Hang in there.
